Celebrating the life of
Charles Raymond Stewart
October 14, 1932 - July 24, 2024
On July 24, 2024, with his wife and two of his daughters at his side, Charles Raymond Stewart entered into eternal rest. He was 91 years young.
Charlie was born on October 14, 1932 in Savannah, GA where he was raised by his adoring parents, the late Wilmer W. Stewart and Arlean Douglas Stewart. He was reared alongside his older brother whom he dearly loved and whom he leaves behind, Col. W. D. Stewart, US Army-Ret., now a resident of Sarasota, FL. He lived in a home where both his grandmothers lived with them: his maternal grandmother, affectionately known as Mama Guggie, and his paternal grandmother, Mama Stewart. The grandmothers even shared a queen sized feather bed. He was raised in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he learned about and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, was baptized, confirmed and served as an altar boy for many years. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1951 and joined the US Navy where he served on the flight deck aboard the USS Wright in the Mediterranean Sea during the Korean War. After his time serving, he took advantage of the GI bill and attended Auburn University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and always cherished his ties to the SAE community. As a job during college, he sold socks and corsages to give dates for football games.
After graduation, Charlie returned to Savannah and joined the family business, Stewart’s Nursery and Florist. Some of his most noteworthy installs include landscaping the Oglethorpe Mall, Oglethorpe Avenue and Liberty Street in downtown Savannah. Landscaping continued to be a passion for him throughout the years. He was actively involved in his community through the Lions Club, the Cobra Club, the Hibernian Society, and his church. In the early 80’s, he shifted careers and moved into commercial real estate as a broker. He sold numerous motels, hotels, grocery stores, drug stores and Walmart stores through the entire southeast during his career. He retired from Palmer & Cay well into his 80’s.
Although his career was enjoyable and fulfilling, Charlie’s family and friends were his true earthly treasures. In his early days, he spent most early mornings and weekends fishing and hunting with his dad and their close friends who were like family. He was blessed with lifelong friendships that withstood the test of time. As he grew older, he was always sure to check in on his friends through phone calls, visits, and emails. Until his last day, his mind continued to be razor sharp, and he loved sharing treasured memories with those that he loved often.
Anyone who knew Charlie adored him for his endearing and unmistakable old south accent, his gentle temperament, his quick wit, and his love of others. Although he was hard of hearing, he sure could listen. He enjoyed sitting down at the piano to play a tune by ear, sitting outside to call the birds, traveling down the ICW to the Bahamas, putting his feet in the sand at the beach, and doing anything at all that involved spending time with his girls and his grandchildren. He was also an avid baseball fan and loved watching his team, the Atlanta Braves.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Ceryle Sasser Stewart. After meeting on a blind date, she was truly the apple of his eye. They loved boating, dancing and perfecting their yard together. He is also survived by all six of his beautiful daughters whom he loved deeply: Charlean Smith, Sandy Blastick, Suzanne Moccia (Chris), April Stewart, Summer Rozier (Josh), and Amber Andrews (Doug). He is also survived by his twelve precious grandchildren: Heather Hall (Mattie), Ben Smith, Melissa Smith, Justin Blastick, Luke Riley, Norah Riley, Jackson Rozier, Landon Rozier, Callie June Andrews, Layla Rozier, Jordan Andrews, and Douglas “Grant” Andrews and one great grandson: Malachi Hall. He is also survived by his beloved standard poodle, Captain. He outlived many of his dear friends but leaves many others behind.
A graveside service is scheduled to take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Greenwich Cemetery, 330 Greenwich Road, Savannah, GA, 31404. All are welcome to attend. The family invites friends and family to join them to celebrate Charlie’s life at the Pirate’s House following the burial from 3:30pm-6:30pm. Flowers can be sent to Fox & Weeks Funeral Home.
“So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:6, 8

Ceryl, we will always remember you and Charlie boating to Hilton Head to take 16 of my Alabama family to Savannah for the afternoon. He was such a true Southern gentleman. Prayers for all your family.

Ceryle, we will surely miss Charlie in the neighborhood. It was always so good to see him ride by, in his golf cart, with Captain. We had many long conversations....a real Southern Gentleman.
